Downbeat Critics Poll names Wycliffe “Best Trombone” for the third year in a row!

Well it’s official. Once again Wycliffe has been named “Best in Trombone” by the Downbeat Critics Poll for his contributions to jazz in 2014. In addition, they have also bestowed upon him the “Rising Star” award for best in miscellaneous instrument–Tuba! Wycliffe is best known as a trombonist, but he is also quite accomplished on Tuba as well as the Trumpet and Soprano Trombone, both of which he plays regularly in concert performances. Soon to be released is a Big Band recording featuring the big band charts of Wycliffe Gordon! This project has been in the making for a while and we are excited to be nearing completion. Recorded last fall with the DiMartino-Osland Jazz Orchestra (DOJO) in Lexington, KY, this CD will feature original compositions and arrangements by Wycliffe. The CD highlights Wycliffe on trombone, trumpet, tuba and vocals and features trumpeter Vince DiMartino and saxophonist Miles Osland.

Wycliffe with Aaron Neville and Swing Central Jazz!

The month of March is a busy one if you are Wycliffe Gordon–19 days of the 31 are spent on the road performing with other great jazz artists, high school jazz bands, professional jazz orchestras, and giving masterclasses and working with jazz musicians of all ages and levels. ¬†Perhaps the highlight of this month is performing with pop artist Aaron Neville at the Cobb Energy Center in Atlanta on March 27 in a “New Orleans” themed program, as well as returning to Savannah for Swing Central Jazz–something Wycliffe has been a part of since it’s inception.
